The code, in 3 steps
Install Node.js 24
Use version 24 (LTS). On 26, the newest, the Chrome the bot downloads comes in half-way and it won't start (tested by the Ninja on Nov 4, 2026). Get it at nodejs.org and pick v24.
Install the bot
Make a new folder, open your terminal in it and run:
Terminalnpm install whatsapp-web.js qrcode-terminal
Create bot.js and run it
Save this file in the folder as
bot.jsand runnode bot.js. It's the project's official example, untouched.bot.jsconst { Client } = require('whatsapp-web.js'); const qrcode = require('qrcode-terminal'); const client = new Client(); client.on('qr', (qr) => { qrcode.generate(qr, { small: true }); }); client.on('ready', () => { console.log('Client is ready!'); }); client.on('message', (msg) => { if (msg.body == '!ping') { msg.reply('pong'); } }); client.initialize();See a QR code in your terminal? On the spare phone, open WhatsApp › Linked devices › Link a device. Once it prints
Client is ready!, text!pingfrom another number and it repliespong. To change the reply, edit'!ping'and'pong'in the code.
The safe way to test it
- Use a spare SIM. A number just for the bot, never your business or personal one.
- Only reply to people who message first. Bulk messages and texting strangers is what usually gets numbers banned.
- It only runs while your computer is on. Close the terminal and the bot stops.
- For real customers, the risk-free route is WhatsApp's official API, which charges per conversation.
